Disabling the annoying mouse info boxes

Hi folks,

I am trying to disable the infotip/tooltip mouse feature (ie. whenever the
mouse is moved over an icon, link or something that is user selectable, a
yellow box with either a description or the link name appears for a few
seconds and then disappears - very similar to alt tags in HTML). Is there an
easy way to do this?

I have tried disabling this feature with regedit.exe as decribed by a
variety of different sources on the internet. Here is an example of one of
the solutions:

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced]
"ShowInfoTip"=0 Modify/create the "ShowInfoTip" DWORD Value and give it a
value of 0 in the Decimal box.

I have tried this as well as a few other things, but after rebooting, the
infotips/tooltips are still displaying quite "happily". Arrrgh! These tool
tips can be useful sometimes but when I am browsing the Start menu items (or
just about anything else), the infotips/tooltips appear and disappear to the
point where it becomes difficult to browse menu items because there is this
goofy "yellow box" covering my selections. To avert this problem, I
practically have to play mouse-tag just to see what menu otions are available
when browsing - double arrrrgh!

Any suggestions or advice that anyone can provide would be greatly
appreciated. Thank you, in advance, to all who reply to this post.

Double-click "My Computer"
Click the "Tools" menu
Click the "View" tab
Pull the elevator bar all the way down
Uncheck "Show pop-up descriptiion ..."

That should help somewhat.

Hey Colon T,

Hey, thanks a bunch. That did help quite a bit. My mouse seems alot less
active now...what a relief. Again, thank you so much for the suggestion.

Hello,
I tried this, and it disabled the info boxes on the desktop but not in
Internet Explorer.
Is there a way to disable them in Internet Explorer, Word, other programs as
well as the desktop?

Thanks,
Jeff

Steve,
Thanks for the reply. I couldn't find "UserPreferencemask" anywhere, as the
instructions said. (even did a search) Any ideas?
Thanks,
Jeff

try merging the attached file into the registry

What the page was basically saying is you can create
UserPreferencemask
if required I think
