Hi all,

First of all I apologise for posting this in 3 groups, but I am not sure
where this is best placed.

Is anyone aware of any way to disable the Windows XP backspace shortcut key
that changes the current explorer window displayed to the parent object?

It allows users with access to a shared folder to backspace their way up the
network heirechy in explorer and view things that we have tried to ensure
they would not normally see using group policy.

Any feedback is appreciated.

I'm still new around here, but I see nobody else has responded. Although I
don't know how to fix it directly, there might be an indirect solution. Try
this. On the parent folder change folder permissions to remove Read/Execute
for GroupX, where GroupX is the group your aggressive user belongs to. Of
course, all child folders will inherit this. Where FolderX is the folder
you want to allow your users to read, Step 2 is change folder permissions on
FolderX to allow Read/Execute, and whatever else they need (Modify, Write).
This should not affect permissions on the parent folder. Sounds silly and
simple, but hey. Out of the mouth of babes...

For FolderX, if the box is checked labeled "Inherit from the Parent
permissions...", then you want to clear it, so FolderX permissions will not
be changed by the parent folder.

If it doesn't work, sorry. At least I paused long enough to offer an idea.

Thanks for the reply, but the issue I want to stop is if someone presses
backspace while looking at a share and they then see all the shares for that
server, another backspace and they see all the servers and so on.

The servers and shares they can see see do have appropriate permissions set,
but I would still prefer them not to have the oppurtunity to browse around
the network so freely.

I really cant understand why the group policy extensions in Explorer to
disable things being displayed in 'My Network Places' can be so easily
bypassed by using a single keyboard shorcut!

Disable any browsing and map everything in the login script or use Network
Places instead of the mapped drives. Unfortunately, a smart user can find
the way to type the UNC path or computer name somewhere, e.g. in the Office
application 'Open...' dialog, and this is a real PITA.
