Disabling IPv6 question

Guest

Hi all,
Let me preface this question by saying I have a very basic knowledge of
computers... Too technical and I'm lost...

OK - that said... I am using Vista Home Basic, and IE6...

Last night, all of a sudden my internet and EMail stopped working. I called
my ISP, and after about an hour of trying different tests to see what was
wrong, the service guy said I had to contact MS...

He told me to say this:

I am locked into IPv6 and a 169 number... and Time Warner Cable (my ISP)
does not support IPv6. He says I have a valid IP Address, and that the BIN
files and Boot files for the modem are correct...

Does anyone understand this? And does anyone know how to go about getting
rid of this IPv6?

ANY help at all would be great! I am on my wife's laptop right now...

Thanks! - Tom

Hello Tom,

There is one thing that you wrote, which I'm questioning: If, as you say,
you are using Vista Home Basic, you can NOT be using IE6. Vista ships with
IE7, and IE6 cannot be installed on that O/S.

Your ISP support is telling you nonsense.

Firstly, unless you intentionally disabled IP 4, the fact that IP 6 is also
enabled rarely matters. Nonetheless, you can disable it by opening Network
Connections from Control Panel, right clicking and selecting properties on
the connection and unchecking IP 6. There's no harm in doing that, but it
is unlikely to make a difference.

Second, an IP address starting with 169 is an address that Windows assigns
if it cannot obtain an address from a DHCP server like your cable modem or
router. Check Device Manager to see if your network adaptor is working
correctly. Then post more specific information. Are you connecting
directly to the cable modem? By Ethernet or USB (hopefully the first)?
Is there a router involved?

In the Network Connections folder, obtain properties of the connection
and clear the check box next to the Internet Protocol version 6
(TCP/IPv6) component in the list under This connection uses the
following items. This method disables IPv6 on your LAN interfaces and
connections, but does not disable IPv6 on tunnel interfaces or the IPv6
loopback interface.

Hello again all, and thank you for your input thus far.

OK - here's what I've got so far, and again - my apologies for being
ignorant in the ways of the computer...

Yes - it is IE7... Apologies - that was just a typo (that much I did know,
LOL)

OK - I checked the Device Manager, and that says that the Cable Modem is
working fine....

My set up is: I have a Motorola SBV4200 Voice Over IP Cable Modem. Coming
out of the back of this moden I have a USB cable going into my desktop (the
computer with the issues), as well aas an ethernet cable going to a wireless
router (feeding my wife's laptop)

The laptop is running A-OK... and up until about an hour and a half before
my original post, the desktop was running A-OK...

I did go into the "Network and Sharing Center" on the desktop, and into the
"View Status" section of the Connection, and un-clicked the IPv6 option... Of
course that did nothing...When I'm looking at the main "Network and Sharing
Screen", I'm seeing "TCDaniels-PC (this computer) - and what would appear to
be a network symbol (a couple of compters) with "Identifying" under it, and
then a picture of a glode (the Internet) with a big red "X" on the
connection...

I'm sure that doesn't help, but it makes me feel better that I'm not just
pushing the wrong button!

Is there anything else I should check to give you guys more info?

Thank you again!

You should use an Ethernet cable to connect your PC's Ethernet port (I
assume you have one - if not you need to add an Ethernet card) to an
Ethernet port on the the router, and not a USB cable from the cable modem.
That will clear it right up.

(In general the USB port and Ethernet port on a cable modem cannot be used
at the same time. When a PC is connected alone to the USB port, an
appropriate device driver must be installed. In general, even in the case
of one PC, it is simpler and more reliable to use an Ethernet connection.)

OK - for what it was worth, I've connected with an ethernet cable... As you
can probably guess, it did slightly less than nothing....

Also - I don't know if this makes a difference or not, but for months, we
were using the setup as I had it before: Cable Modem with USB Connection
directly to my computer, and Cable Modem with Ethernet Connection to
router... We never had any problems (we were surfing simultaneously ALL the
time)

Don't know if that makes a difference...

Have you installed any new software? If it was working for months and then
just stopped working... sounds like something changed on your PC. The 169 IP
address is an auto-configuration address that Windows assigns if DHCP has
not provided an IP address. Check the TCP/IPv4 settings to see if DHCP was
somehow disabled. Open Network and Sharing Center, click on the Manage
network connections link, right click on the appropriate network connection
and chose properties, highlight TCP/IPv4 and click the Properites button and
check that the Obtain an IP address automatically radio button is enabled.
You can also click the advanced button on the TCP/IPv4 properties page and
ensure that DHCP Enabled shows up in the IP Addresses group box.

Good luck.

Greetings, Lane

No - I hadn't installed any new software or anything... My wife's laptop was
experiencing some issues with her internet connection, so she shut down and
unplugged the router (which we've done 5-10 times in the past with no
problems...)

When she turned everything back on, she had internet back, but I didn't, and
it kept coming up with the same message: "The server name you entered can not
be found on the network (it might be down temporarily). Please verify that
you are online and that the server name is correct."

Now - I know that from time to time, at work we'll lose our internet
connection, and we have to call to have them push some button to reconnect...
So I called Time Warner Cable, and tried to find out if this was the case
here... The guy said "no" and - well here we are...

I just did what you mentioned - and it seems that everything is as you said
it SHOULD be... "Obtain an IP Address automatically" is checked, "DCHP
Enabled" etc...

Anything else I should try?

Thank you again! - Tom

Are you still getting the 169.254.x.x IP address? If so, you're not getting
an IP address through DHCP. Have you looked at your router's settings? I
assume your router is acting as your DHCP server.

OK - my apologies for being an idiot... How do I check that?

Well... hmm... depends on your router. I have a Linksys router that I access
from a browser window. I assume all home routers are accessed in the same
manner, but that may be a misconception on my part. At any rate, you need to
set up an internet shortcut that points to your router's IP address. If
you're not sure what your router's IP address is, open a cmd window and type
"ipconfig" without quotes, of course. Look for the Default Gateway IP
address listed for your active NIC and that's your router's IP. In the
internet shortcut you create, type in http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx , the x's being
your router's IP address. You probably need to provide an admin acct and pw.
Sounds like maybe you've never done that before... might be "admin" or
"administrator" and might be a blank password. If not blank, then you have
to find the doc's for your router (usually can find softcopy on the vendor's
website) to find out what the default pw is for the admin acct.

Good luck!

Your ISP is wrong.
IPv6 problems do slow the connection and it can block some websites, but it
doesn't shutdown all the connections.
Just think, if your isp doesn't suport ipv6 (means they are obsolete), and
you wore using it before and couldn't, then how did you have internet until
now?

your problem is somethint else... and it could be a lot of possibilities.

i would check the router again... there's usualy a "reset" function on
them...

Regards
