Disabling ICMP PING

B

Bruce

I'm running Windows XP Home, SP2, with all updates. I want to disable
ICMP, but when I go to the ICMP firewall settings, "Allow incoming echo
request" is checked, but I'm not able to remove the check. It's greyed
out. All other ICMP settings are accessible. I have admin rights.

(My XP Pro machine allows me to access incoming echo request, which is
off.)

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Bruce

Bruce,

Click Start, Run and type Regedit.exe
Navigate to the following locations:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\WindowsFirewall\StandardProfile\IcmpSettings
-and-
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\WindowsFirewall\DomainProfile\IcmpSettings

Delete the "IcmpSettings" key in both of the above locations (if exists)
Close Regedit.exe and restart Windows.

Follow-up with malware cleanup, just in case:
