Disabling Automatic ActiveX updates

I need to disable ActiveX updates in IE6SP2(OS Windows XP SP2). I don't want
to disable activeX because the application needs that but I want to disable
updates bcs when IE goes out to check for updates the browser hangs until it
times out. This causes IE to hang from 2-4 mins which is unacceptable for an
INTERNAL ONLY application.(These PC's do not have internet access and don't
need it). We were able to reduce the time it takes to time out by adding a
rule to our firewall that REJECTS the attempts instead of just DROPPING it.
But it still takes 7-8 secs which is not good.

I have done research for the last few weeks and found several suggestions on
attempting to disable but none so far have worked. In the firewall logs I
can see the PC attempting to contact two sites consistently. First, Internet
Explorer Components Gallery and then various IP's for
deploy.akamaitechnologies.com.

The latest article I found(and was hopeful about) is below:

Great info but still did not stop the update attempts.

Any suggestions?

The article is talking about Automatic Updates.

Instead I suspect that you may be seeing an effect of
"Install on Demand".

Hmm... see if these changes recommended for Windows Server users
help with your case too:

http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/workshop/security/szone/overview/esc_changes.asp

(MSN search for
"install on demand" advanced "internet explorer" site:microsoft.com
)
