Disabled Standby & Hibernation

When I click "Start", "Turn off computer" on my laptop, the Standby button is
"Greyed out". If I go into Control Panel, Power options, there are no
entries for System Standby & System Hibernates.

I have already tried http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_standby.htm, but it
refers to a problem with 3D screen saver. I have no screen saver set. I
downloaded the fix but it will not install as I already have SP1 installed.
This is not the problem, the Standby "button" is greyed out and will not
activate when I select start/turn off computer.

How can I get it back to normal?

Hi Rick Rogers !!

I used msconfig to disable pretty well everything, and the standby/hibernate
option has returned. All I need to do now is to start the elimination
process to see which item is causing the problem.

Many thanks.

Hi,

Good, please post back with the source of the problem so others can benefit
from the information.

After disabling everything in msconfig, I then re-enabled one at a time until
the culprit caused the problem again. It turned out to be the drivers for my
"Ubinetics GSM PC Card". This s/w intentionally disables standby & hibernate
because it is in fairly constant contact with the mobile base station, and
standby/hibernation causes problems. I can reinstall when I want to use the
card again (its very useful for SMS & when out & about for easy but slow
internet access).
