Disable Auto-Expand in Windows Explorer

It's a slight annoyance -- when I select a folder (in the left pane) of
Windows Explorer, that node always expands to show all the sub-directories.
Is there a way to disable this "feature" so when I click on a folder, it
doesn't expand? (I've already done some searches but couldn't find the
answer.)

I must have looked at that list in the View tab a dozen times -- Simple
Folder View seems so innocuous.
