Andrew

I have just downloaded directx 9.0 from microsoft and I
received 2 error messages which stated dpnet.dll and
dpnhpast.dll are not valid window images, pretty amazing
considering I have windows XP and I downloaded this stuff
from windows, talk about doctor heal thyself.
Anyway can anybody suggest anything?

Are you running at least SP1 for Windows XP, Andrew, and do you have
Cryptographic Services enabled in Control Panel/Administrative
Tools/Services? Have you done any "tweaks" by disabling services?

Thanks for the reply
I've just checked the Cryptographic services and it is
enabled. I am not aware that I have done any 'tweaks' and
I get regular automatic updates from windows for my
windows home edition which have SP2 in brackets, so I
presume I have at least SP1

Hmmm. Perhaps this information from the Knowledge Base article at http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;811263 will assist you:

1.. Click Start, and then click Run.
2.. In the Open box, type cmd, and then click OK.
3.. At the command prompt, type the following commands, and press ENTER after each line:
net stop cryptsvc
ren %systemroot%\system32\catroot2 oldcatroot2
net start cryptsvc
exit

4.. Try to install the updates to Windows again. If the problem is resolved, do not continue with the remaining steps in this section. If the problem is not resolved, restart your computer, and then continue with the remaining steps.
5.. Click Start, and then click Run.
6.. In the Open box, type cmd, and then click OK.
7.. At the command prompt, type sfc /purgecache and then press ENTER.

Note This command may require access to the Windows installation source files. You should receive the following message at the command prompt when this command has completed:

Windows File Protection successfully made the requested change.
8.. At the command prompt, type sfc /scannow, and then press ENTER.
