DirectX 8.0

Hi guys,
I am running an XP, and I am trying to install a game. Every time I try to
install it it says directX 8.0 is not compatable with my system.
How do I get my computer to recognise DirectX 8.0, or is this impossible?
Your help would be appreciated.

Thanks D.d,
it appears I do have directx 9.0 and it is all up and running.
I guess this game just will not run with anything other than directX 8.0

Check the game setup. Some games will try to install DirectX by default, and
maybe the older version of directx is throwing up the error.
I don't think DX8 was ever available for XP, (DX9 is backward compatible).

Are you using a 32 bit or 64 bit OS?

When you run the setup, see if there is an option to install DirectX, if so,
uncheck it, or answer no if prompted to install directx.
If the game is on CD, look around the CD and see if there is another program
called setup.exe.

Sometimes there is a setup.exe in the root of the CD drive, and another in
the game directory. Running the setup in the game directory can bypass the
attempt to install DirectX.

If that fails, you could try copying all of the files to hard disk, and
replacing the files in the directX directory with directx 9 setup files. You
might need to remname the dxsetup to whatever the dx8 version setup.exe is
called. Then try running the game setup from the hard disk.

What is the game?

Wow, it will take me a bit to digest that lol.
I am running a 32 (I think). The game is called 'Action Man Destruction X'

I have just re-installed the game without directX 8, then re-started the
computer. Now an error message appears: "Cannot find registry entry: Please
re-install Action Man Destruction X"

That's not very likely since all DirectX versions are downwardly compatible.
Therefore, applications have minimum requirements regarding the DX version,
however, they do not expect a *specific* DX version in order to run.

Well this game seems to be for Win95/98, so maybe the game is trying to
access a registry that isn't where it thinks it is.

My only other suggestion would be to install the game again, but this time
with administrator privileges, and you may need to run the game with an
admin account.

If the game was more popular someone may have made a hack to get it to work,
but off hand I can't find anything apart from second hand copies for sale.

If you have a dual core machine, this can cause problems also, but you are
not at that stage yet ;)

You could try doing a general search about getting Win98 games to run in XP

I think I got the answer! (11 years later, but I stumbled onto the same problem with the same game today)

I am running Windows 7 on a laptop (Direct X 11) and Windows XP (Direct X 9.0c) on VMWare Fusion 8.5.3 on a MacBook Pro. For both platforms, these are the problems and solutions I had:

Problem: "Cannot find registry entry: Please re-install Action Man Destruction X"
Solution: Compatibility for Windows 95, 98 (and XP, while running Windows 7 specifically)

Problem: The game is rendered black-white (not grayscale) when it should render in color.
Solution: In Setup Screen (first prompt appearing when starting the game), select "Software Renderer" in the drop-down menu for Video.

For Windows XP, I am still experiencing a millisecond of black screen every 5 seconds (perhaps some graphic element loading in batches), but have not found a solution yet. In Windows 7, the game plays perfectly.
