I can download the setup program for directx 10 but when i try to run the
setup, i get a message saying that set up could not download the file, try
again later or check my network connection. Anyone else have this problem or
a solution?

DirectX 10 is only available if you are using Windows Vista.
It was not designed for use with Windows XP.

To add to what Carey said,

The DX10 hacks out there for Windows XP are only for testing. They can not
be used within Windows XP for use with games and other applications. IT is
only to run specific tests within XP to see how DX10 works.

I got the same problem and i've got Windows Vista Basic.
It is realy irritating because i cant play Age of Conan without dx10.
My graphic's card is compatible with dx10, i have Nvidia GeForce GTX 260.

I tried the full download and same error. Using Vista x64.

At that point, what would it be trying to download ? I
thought the objective of a redistributable, was to avoid
any further components. All the components should have
been there. Could you post the exact error message ?
Perhaps someone here will recognize it.

Sure thing.

I download dxwebsetup.exe from the link you provide it, save it in my
downloads. For the heck of it I ran it both regularly and as administrator.
Same error.

"Setup could not download the file. Please retry later or check network
connection"

Strange indeed. it is the 11/11 update.

We're talking about different files. The redistributable one is

http://download.microsoft.com/downl...-ab27-61f11024e97f/directx_nov2008_redist.exe

Look at the link

"DirectX End-User Runtimes (November 2008) Full Download"

It is an 86MB download, but at least there shouldn't be
complaints about downloading anything further. A redist is
supposed to be self contained.

Gah, downloading it now. Sorry Paul - and thanks for the clarification. Had a
few DX10 windows open at once and was certain I chose the package you
mentioned. Will report back if the new one doesn't work. Thanks again.

So all the Google hits for "DirectX 10 for WinXP" are false?

I note that NONE lead to an official MS site, which makes me suspicious.

You're right to be suspicious; a healthy amount of paranoia is a good
thing<g>.

Some folk have figured ways to port parts of it to XP and that's likely
some of what you're seeing. But at the same time with things like that,
there are usually more malwares purporting to do that when in reality
they contain a virus, worm, trojan or worse. I'd say to stick with
reliable sources. As Carey said, it's for Vista, not XP.

Cheers,

Twayne
