Directory/Read Only Problem

J

Joe Williams

Windows XP Pro in a Windows 2000 domain environment. Fresh install. Joined
the domain, everything operating normally.

However, if I go to the C:\ drive and create a directory, the directory
indicates it is READ ONLY on the properties page of that directory.
Subsequently any time a file is opened or accessed in this directory it
fails with a READ ONLY message and the user cannot do anything with that
file or any other file in that directory. In fact, all directories on the
computer (Program Files, Windows, Documentes and Settings, ) are all checked
as READ ONLY.

I have looked at all the permissions on the SECURITY tab of the folder, in
fact I have given everyone FULL ACCESS to the folder in question. This does
not solve the issue. When I create a new folder it is still created with
READ ONLY checked.

If I uncheck READ ONLY and click APPLY and go back to the properties, it
will still have READ ONLY checked.

Anyone know what's up and how to correct?

Thanks

Joe

Yes, in WinXP all folders are Read Only. Not a problem since that does not
apply to the files within the folder.

Hi Joe,
I have a similar problem to yours and can't seem to find any answer to it.
My problem is that I can't delete a folder after it has had a file opened
with in it.
Explorer seems to keep the file handle open and when I try to delete the
folder I
get an ACCESS DENIED, FILE MAY BE IN USE error message.
The folder also shows a read only check in the properties dialogue window.
Not a normal check, but a green square.
The only answer I have to my problem is to close the file handle in one of
three ways.
Reboot the computer
Close and restart explorer
or use a little program called process explorer by sysinternals, to manually
close the handle.
These three methods allow me to delete the folder.
This may not help you but I'm sure the problems we are having are related.
Good Luck
