Directory bloody VANISHED !!

I've NEVER seen anything like it ! ...EVER.
I've never before had a directory vanish without trace, taking several
sub-directories with it. And to add insult to injury, XP Homes' chkdsk and
Norton find nothing wrong with my FAT's. It was a directory called
K:\T2003 containing sub-directories called 'codes' and 'residntl' and
several others.

I had Ominpage Pro loaded and minimised, and was using Corel Photopaint 10
and my Canon N65OU twain scanner driver. I was fiddling with black, mid and
white points on a scanned greyscale image, in the twain software, and saving
those adjustment profiles (*.adg) using facilities in the Canon twain
scanner software. Several *.adg files I had deleted and are in the
recycle bin, where you'd expect them to be. One *.tif file that was in
the K:\2003\residntl directory, and which I had deleted, was in the
recycle bin. Just out of interest, after I discovered that K:\2003 had
disappeared, I tried to restore that *.tif file, which of course generated
an error message, something to do with the K:\2003 structure having vanished
I suppose.

Bloody good job there wasn't stuff in there that I couldn't afford to lose !
I haven't ever seen a directory vanish like that in 25 years !

Search for *.tif in all directories. Normally when I hear this story, the
user accidentally dragged the folder into another.

Thanx Shanon, I did that several times, whilst in a state of disbelief that
it could genuinely have completely vanished, (i.e. I did lots of checking
and searching in case I had slipped up somewhere without noticing it), e.g.
I right clicked on 'My computer' in Windows Explorer and searched all local
hard drives c: d: e: f: g: h: i: and k: it was nowhere to be found. I
tried doing the same search for *.adg files and search found the deleted
ones in the recycle bin but, no trace of the actual directory i.e. had not
accidentally deleted the folder k:\2003 or dragged and dropped it
somewhere.

All I'm really left with is the suspicion that it was something to do with
the older Canon twain software, which I'd pulled up via 'Acquire' in Corel
Photopaint 10 and was extensiveley fiddling in there on the Tone | Histogram
tab where there's two icons for "Load curve data from a file" (sort of
browse folders facility icon) and "Save curve data to a file." Several
times while using the "Load curve data from a file" facility, I right
clicked on *.adg files and deleted several of them. So the only clue I have
is that while working in there caused some sort of problem for XP / Corel
Photopaint 10 / and or Canon scangear CS-U / N65OU twain software that
resulted in the collapse of the structure k:\2003 and it sub-directories,
and files, all vanishing without trace.

When I've set up a similar structure, and start serious scanning work on
this project, I'll be making frequent restore points in case it tries to
vanish again.

Know that System Restore does NOT backup your files/directories.

...oh s**t ! ...I'll have to keep a cd-r in the drive then and do a frequent
burn, I'm not having my work vanish into thin air again, (not that I'd got
really got started on that project yet ...was just playing with getting the
best grayscale images. ...I think there's something in my Norton software
called "mirror," I think that backs up the FAT's, if I'm not mistaken.
