'Directcd' will cause windows to become unstable....How do I get rid
of it...Neither Roxio, Adaptec, or Take Two was ever installed ?

Searched the registry and can't find ANY refernce to DirectCD or
Roxio, or Take Two or Adaptec etc.

Thanks for any help you can give

Thanks for answering, this error occurs at boot up. It shows up as an
error message in the bottom right task bar tray. I am running Windows
XP Pro. After clicking OK the error disapears and everything works
fine.

I'd wanna...

Check your system for "hijackware":

Dealing with Hijackware

http://www.mvps.org/inetexplorer/Darnit.htm#tshoot
http://aumha.org/a/parasite.htm

CoolWebSearch Chronicles & CWShredder
http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/cwschronicles.html

Run in this order:

1. CWShredder (fix all)

2. Ad-Aware (fix all)

3. Spybot (generally, fix all in red)

Important: You *must* seek updates for Ad-Aware, Spybot, etc., before each
and every use, even "right out of the box". But even they can't catch
everything, 24/7. When all else fails, HijackThis
(http://www.merijn.org/files/hijackthis.zip) is the preferred tool to use.
It will help you to both identify and remove any hijackware/spyware. **Post
your files to http://forums.spywareinfo.com/ or
http://forum.aumha.org/viewforum.php?f=30 for expert analysis, not here.**

[Alternate download pages for many of the above tools may be found at
http://aumha.org/a/parasite.htm.]

Also update your virus definitions and then run a full system scan. From
now on, do both daily.

So How Did I Get Infected Anyway?

Ralph,

In addition:

I see that you've not installed any Roxio products, but still give this solution a try.

Go here: http://www.aumha.org/regfiles.htm
Download the REG patch "Restore Missing CD Drive" (Search keyword "CDGONE")

This patch removes the Roxio filter driver references from the registry and solves the problem.

Someone must have installed *something* that resulted in one of its
'driver' style files being around, leaving an orphaned registry entry.
To tidy up, get a registry patch file, cdgone.reg, from
www.aumha.org/downloads/cdgone.zip, extract it, r-click on it and merge
it into the registry

You will then need to reinstall any burning software that you *do* use.

Ramesh,

That not only fixed the DirectCD problem but also solved a DVD lockup
problem on my Laptop and a different customers newly built desktop
(see XP Hardware newsgroup for my description of that problem) FYI As
stated before with the DVD lockup after I ran the CDGONE fix I had no
more DVD lockup, but when I re-installed NERO which was what came
with the CDRW on the desktop and DVD-R/RW on the laptop, the lock up
returned. From what I gathered about the CDGONE fix you are supposed
to have to re-install your burning software after running it, but
after finding out that, that would bring back the lockup error I chose
to not re-install it and after testing I found it still worked AOK.

Again thanks for your help !!!!!!!!!!!!

Alex,

That I found will fix it, and it fixed a DVD lockup problem on two
other unrelated systems, and I did not have to reload the Burning
software to get it to work. In fact if I did, then the DVD lockup
problem would return, See my other replys to this message addressed to
Ramesh.

Thanks for your help,

Ralph Malph

Glad that helped, Ralph. Thanks for the feedback.
