Direct play voice setup 0x80004005 ERROR

N

Niki

I've tried for several days to post to the
microsoft.public.directx.misc newsgroup but keep getting
the "Service Temporarily Unavailable We apologize for
this inconvenience. Please try again later." message so I
am posting it here. Maybe someone from Microsoft will see
this and help me.

Let me also add that I have searched and found many, many
people with this same problem and the only resolution
I've ever seen was one guy who uninstalled McAfee 7.0.

PLEASE SOMEONE HELP!!

Thanks for the reply Stephen. I have answered you at
certain points with asterisks (***) to indicate my
comments.

Hi Niki,
At home I am using Gamevoice as well, it seems
to work just fine, so this is interesting. Do you think
that the installation of Dreamweaver MX and Extension
Manager were the cause? This would be a good test to
confirm one way or the other. ***I have no idea if this
is the problem or not, but I uninstalled them and checked
for registry leftovers and there were none.***
Checking the error at
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-
us;810686 seems to be the answer to your problem. But
other issues must be present if that is not resolving the
problem. Are you following the instruction exactly?
***I am following the instructions explicitly.***

Usually when registry setting are set, they don't change
unless a program is changing them. You might consider
removing the software, changing the registry then re-
installing and see if that works. (Gamevoice software)

***I have followed these steps (removed GameVoice
software, reboot, change registry, reboot, reinstall
GameVoice, reboot, try GameVoice direct play voice setup
four or five times, all of these attempts including
removing the unit from the USB port) and each time
running the DirectPlay Voice Setup resets the registry
values to zero.***

Also, if you could send in a copy of your
DirectX.log file it will often point to issues that may
be a problem. It resides on your machine.

***I will copy and paste the log file in subsequent
messages. Would it be handy to have my DxDiag.txt also?
***

In order to restore a system you have to set a restore
point. Restore points are allocated to certain space
limitations, so if you exceed that you will losse some of
your older restore points. Puzzled why the one you set,
didn't restore.

***I figured it must have been a size limitation.***

Not sure why you would want to restore from
DX9.0b backwards, what made you want to do that? DX9.0b
has all previous DX's build in with backward
compatibility, and sets you up for games of the future.

***I wanted to restore backwards because before I
upgraded to DX9.0b I was at least able to open the Game
Voice software and host a chat, I just couldn't join a
chat; after the DX9.0b install is when I started getting
the Direct Play Voice setup error.***

Make sure you visit windows update and update
all files, also check for later versions of Gamevoice for
DX9.0b. There are often updates there.

***I have all windows updates installed. As far as I know
the latest update to GameVoice updates it to version
1.5...do you know of anything later than that?***

Let us know how you come out on this.

Thanks for post!

I use Microsoft SideWinder Game Voice 1.5 to chat
with fellow gamesters.
The last time I successfully used it to join a chat
was January 3, 2004. On January 4, I installed
Dreamweaver MX and Extension Manager. On January 17, I
could not join a chat on Game Voice, nor would the
program shut down automatically, I had to force it to
close via Task Manager. The next time I tried to launch
it, I received an error message that said "Game Voice
encountered an error with the speech recognition engine.
Please correct the command. If this doesn't work, try
reinstalling Game Voice." There is no place to "correct
the command" so I uninstalled and reinstalled Game Voice
multiple times.
I tried to do a System Restore to January 1, 2, 3,
or 4 but it would not work. I uninstalled Dreamweaver MX
and Extension Manager. On January 24, I upgraded to
DirectX 9.0b. I set a system restore before I upgraded
but my system won't go back. I reinstalled DirectX 9.0b.
By this time, Game Voice would not successfully
pass the Sound Hardware Test Wizard. I followed the
advice in MS KB 810686; every time I modify the registry
values in steps 12-14, reboot, the modifications show
they are changed, but once I try and run the Sound Test
again, the DirectPlay Voice Setup fails and the registry
values are reset to 0 (Full, Half, Mic).
I reduced my hardware acceleration to basic [SB
Audigy Audio (DF80)]. I am unable to update to the latest
Gateway OEM SB Audigy sound drivers; after spending over
an hour and a half in live chat with Gateway techs, the
changes will not take. I have removed my sound driver in
safe mode and reinstalled it from the recovery disks.
I disabled all programs in my startup tab.

In DXDIAG I got a Pass for FullDuplex, Pass for
HalfDuplex, and a "Failed Gracefully" lol for
MicDetected. Started to complete the test wizard and got
the same 0x80004005 error as originally incurred. Checked
regedit and all values set back to 0.
No matter what I do I get two versions of
dvpsetup.exe each time the sound test begins (and I can't
use GameVoice until I get a complete sound test). I have
tried to run the sound test from Game Voice, DXDIAG, and
Control Panel/Sound...same results each time.
I verified my microphone is working correctly (I
recorded my voice in Sound Recorder).
I verified I do not have two sound cards installed.

I have a Gateway 2.4ghz Intel P4, with 1G RAM.

I posted this item in
microsoft.public.games.discussion and was referred here
(microsoft.public.directx.misc). I hope someone from
Microsoft can help me.

I have done everything recommended in your message and I
STILL have the same problems.

I can't believe I can't use a simple microphone with this
computer.

Dear Ryan

The problem you are having and everyone else is, is that the Mcafee firewall/antivirus is causing a direct voice lay error in the sound card creative. I no longer use Mcafee. It was the software that caused this error. My error occured when i ran the sound test in hardware. When I uninstalled Mcafee my tests are fine and no more error

Hope this helps.

To all that have this problem

If you have a creative sound card and use mcafees anti/firwall this is whats causing the error. You may want to try uninstall mcafee and run the test again. When I stopped using Mcafee the error disappeared. I was using Mcafee 7.0 professional. When I uninstalled Mcafees the error disappeared.

Good luck with it
