Direct parallel problem

Hi folks,

I have been having a great problem with my "direct parallel". I noticed it
when I started having problems with my mp3 players. When I would connect one
or the other, my pc would recognize it, but everytime I would try to add a
song or open it to change something on it, I would get a notice saying that
it's not the correct format and that I needed to format it to get it to work
right. Well, I tried it with the first one, wiped out everything I had on it
and I still could not get my pc to let me open it. I tried my other mp3
player and the same problem. I didn't format it, but I can't transfer songs
or open it, because it is the wrong "format". I tried reinstalling the
software for the first one (Sansa e250) and my CD-Rom was giving me the same
error message, that the disk was the wrong format and I needed to format it.
I did a Microsoft update, nothing happened, I did a system restore, no
change. I finally decided to open up my device manager, and under the
network adapter I noticed an exclamation point on the direct parallel. I
tried updating the driver, but I could not read off my Windows XP CD. I
received the same "wrong format" message. I started trying to update by
browsing to the location of my windows drivers. When I would go that route,
I would get this message:

An error occurred during this installation, a service installation section
in this INF is invalid.

Anybody have any ideas of how to fix this? I can't read off my CD-roms or
USB ports. If this helps, I have an AMD Athlon XP 2100+. This is the first
time I have ever run into this problem. I did a full system virus scan to be
sure that was clear and nothing came up on the search.

Thanks for your help!

I would not bother with parallel connections but use a network
connection instead. Parallel connections is legacy technology and
some modern machines don't even have a parallel port any more.
Network adapters are cheap and there is a vast amount of
knowledge on how to configure and trouble-shoot network
connections.
