Direct Connection over internet between two computer, How?

K, I'm using Windows XP Home edition. Problem: I want to connect directly to
a friend's computer so we can transfer information without having to email
it. (IE movies, music, and such, files too large to be transferred over the
email) I used to live with this friend and we had a in-house network going
on. Thing is, because of my job, I had to move halfway around the world.
Marine corps will do that to you. Now, I'd like to be able to create a
connection over the internet that will achieve to some degree the same
ability as that in-house connection. I know hackers make a connection like
this to upload and download files. I just want to be able to exchange
information between my friend and I. He also uses windows XP Home edition.
So, I know it's possible, I just don't know how to do it. What would I have
to do to set this up, what would he have to do? Any info would be greatly
appreciated.

VPN Is The Answer Xero ..

u have to to be u and the other pc in the same workgroup and then u use vpn
!
Virtual private network

Which allow u to connect to the other pc through the internet as if u r in a
