When I dislodge the power cord from my laptop the screen dims. I'm unable to
locate how to change this to a bright screen... same as how it looks with
power cord connected.
Help.

What make of laptop? In any event, read the laptop's manual.
There might be a power icon in the taskbar that has options
for operating the laptop whilst on battery power. Also look
in Control Panel for same thing.

Options for functioning on battery power are often included in the BIOS,
which include the default brightness setting.

What does this have to do with XP?

Sounds like you need a new battery.

Did you ever get an answer to this? I bought two batteries when I bought my
new Dell Inspiron. That's a waste if I can't work on battery power because of
a dull screen.
Thanks

That would be handled by Dell tech support. Ask them.
