Difficulties with XP setup

John Lippold

I have installed XP Home edition on my system. When attempting to obtain XP
Critical updates from windows, they would not install. I have had repeated
restarts indicating "Remote Procedure Call (RPC) system terminated
unexpectedly". I checked in this news group and found that the primary
cause is the Blaster and Welchia worms. I downloaded Norton fixes for these
worms and ran them. I attempted to run the windows updates KB823980,
KB833330 and KB824146 in order. The system kept shutting down the update
application prior to the fix being installed. Norton antivirus 2004 would
not run. It also would start, but then vanish off the screne without fully
loading.

I finally re-installed XP over the current install in attempts to correct
this. I went into SAFE MODE after the install and ran the three listed
critical updates and they installed fine. I then went back to normal boot,
uninstalled Norton AV 2004 and re-installed it. I still can not get Norton
AV to run. It starts and then vanishes from the screne without allowing me
to update or set preferences.

If anyone has any ideas, please email a response to me at
(e-mail address removed)

Thank you,
John Lippold

Disconnect from the Internet and run the fix again. Then do a full virus
scan. After that, try downloading the updates.
