Windows XP Home Service Pack 2 updates fail to install

Hi,

I have a couple of questions re windows XP.

1) Recently I re-installed windows xp v 5.1 Service pack 2 (after my PC shut
off due to a power failure windows kept trying to load in "safe mode" I do
have a surge protector which protected the PC though) and as a result
downloaded the windows updates. Trouble is when I try and install them they
error out on my PC. There are 72 of them!. Any ideas as to how to stop them
erroring out?

I turned off Norton AV in case that was the problem but still no luck.

2) When you re install windows is there a chance it can clean off all your
loaded programs / software? It did not do this but I understand this can
happen?

Regards

Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update,
from Microsoft Update, or by using Automatic Updates after
you repair a Windows XP installation
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144

Can't figure that out?

Get Dial-a-Fix:
http://wiki.djlizard.net/Dial-a-fix

Use its options to fix:
- Windows Installer
- Windows Update
- All the Registration Center options.

Turn off the "Empty System32\Catroot 2"
Do NOT do "Flush SoftwareDistribution".

Then click "GO" and wait until it is done... Reboot will be needed.

- Download/Install Windows Update v3.

http://download.windowsupdate.com/W...one/7.0.6000.381/WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe
(You *may* need to install it using the command line switch "/wuforce"
right after the reboot - immediately after logging in.)

- Download/Install the 927891 patch.
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=7A81B0CD-A0B9-497E-8A89-404327772E5A

- Reboot.

- Visit http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ and scan for/install updates.

- Come back and let us know how things went!

2) ...
A chance that it can format your drive and start clean? Not really 'a
chance' - but a choice during the installation of wiping the
drive(s)/partition(s) and cleanly installing the OS *IF* you have an actual
Windows XP installation media set and not some 'recovery' set from the
original equipment manufacturer.

Hi,

As a matter of interest option 2 from the Microsoft Website advised to
download one of the following: How does one know though which windows system
you have X86,X64 or Itanium based? I was not sure so I went with option 1 and
changed the Register the Wups2.dll file.

Would appreciate your advise on the option 2 question.

Method 2: Download and install the Windows Update Agent
To resolve this problem, follow these steps: 1. Download the appropriate
version of the Windows Update Agent to a known location. To do this, visit
one of the following Web sites.
AgentWindows, x86-based systems
http://download.windowsupdate.com/W...one/7.0.6000.381/WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe
(http://download.windowsupdate.com/w...one/7.0.6000.381/windowsupdateagent30-x86.exe)
Windows, x64-based systems
http://download.windowsupdate.com/W...one/7.0.6000.381/WindowsUpdateAgent30-x64.exe
(http://download.windowsupdate.com/w...one/7.0.6000.381/windowsupdateagent30-x64.exe)
Windows, Itanium-based systems
http://download.windowsupdate.com/W...ne/7.0.6000.381/WindowsUpdateAgent30-ia64.exe
(http://download.windowsupdate.com/w...ne/7.0.6000.381/windowsupdateagent30-ia64.exe)
2. Click Start, click Run, click Browse, locate the file that you saved in
step 1, and then click Open.
3. Add the /wuforce switch to the end of the run command, and then click OK.
For example, the run command may appear as the following:
C:\WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe"/wuforce
4. Click Run.
5. Follow the steps to complete the wizard

If you don't know - you have a 99.99% chance of having x86 or 32 bit Windows
XP.

In order to get 64bit (x64) or Itanium, you would have to have the hardware
(no completely unheard of now - but you would have KNOWN a year ago if you
purchased 64bit hardware...) You likely have 32bit.
