Different xp problem, same old confusion

Ok, Its a gateway laptop with XP pro installed, a virus managed to
delete the system files and wont allow the computer to boot up to the
log on screen. Tried to load up in safemode, same problem.

So, with the missing "system" file, i tried to reinstall windows, but
it freezes right at the part where it scans for the other operating
system,... every time it freezes. Tried to do the repair option,
freezes after confirming. What to do?

Have you tried using the setup program to format the disck and install from
scratch?

Thats where I stopped. School lap top rented out to friend of mine. Oh
well, I believe she's going to take it back to the school and have them
have a whack at it.
