Different kinds of Shutdown dialog boxes

I'm using XP Pro version 2002, SP2. On some of my computers, when I give the
Shutdown command I get the new-style dialog box, that says "Turn off
computer" at the top and has the 3 buttons you can choose from, Stand By,
Turn Off and Restart. But I recently re-did one of the computers and now it
has the old-style Shutdown dialog box, which says "Shut Down Windows" at the
top. It has a drop-down field that lets you choose between logging off,
shutting down, hibernating, restarting, or standing by. Does anyone know how
I can get the new-style Shutdown dialog box on this machine? I've looked at
the Taskbar and Start Button properties but they don't seem to have anything
to do with it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Carol

You'll get the new-style Shutdown box if you enable the Welcome screen
(in Control Panel > User Accounts > Change the way users log on and
off).

Hope this helps :)

Thanks for the lightning-fast response, but that won't work. I don't want to
have the Welcome screen enabled because my students are beginners with
computers, as well as being blind or visually impaired, and the Welcome
screen might confuse them. Furthermore, on my other computers I don't have
the Welcome screen enabled, but I do get the new-style Shutdown dialog box,
so there must be a way to get the one without the other. Thanks anyway.

Hi,

I am not 100% positive but if I remembered correctly, the old style will
show up if you joined a workgroup or a domain which then will require you to
log in based on the selection of the current computer or the
domain/workgroup that you are a member of.

If you did not join any domain or workgroup, Windows then will use the "new
style" as it will not check and ask if you want to log in this computer or
the domain/workgroup since it must be this computer.

To check if you have joined a domain or workgroup, point your mouse to "My
Computer" icon on the desktop and right-click your mouse and select
"properties". Select "Computer Name" from the dialog box and see the
detailed descriptions for if there is a "domain name" or "workgroup name"
registered. Furthermore, you could click "Change" on the same tag and see
if you are "a member of...." any domain or workgroup.

In any case, if I remembered correctly, you can't use the new style once
joined a domain or workgroup which is something I wished to do as well.

Hope this helps.

Well, the other computers here are part of the same workgroup, but they get
the new-style shutdown screen. So I don't think being a member of a domain
or workgroup is the issue. But thanks anyway. -Carol

I encountered the same problem. I installed chinese fireworks 8 on a english
system and the dialog just changed to the old-style one. I suppose it might
have something to do with language but I don't know how to fix it.
By the way ,is system's 'Help and Support' and 'System Information' not
working either?

I haven't installed any other languages, or changed the Regional and Language
Options at all. Yes, the Help and Support works, but I'm not sure what you
mean by System Information. Thanks for the response.
