Under HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT there are "Directory" and "Folder." Is there any
difference between the two? Is one in the process of being
deprecated/older/etc.? Thanks in advance.

Directory refers to an actual directory in the file system, with a
cluster or clusters of disk sectors containing entries. Described in
Folder Options - File Types as a 'File Folder'.

Plain Folder includes that but also other entities that look similar to
the user but represent different collections of items, without those
directories in the file system - for example Control Panel; Network
Connections; Printers and Faxes

As an aside, the two terms are really synonyms in everyday talk. For
years they were just called directories, then starting in win95 ms
decided to start calling them folders.
