How can I globally change Windows XP folders?

Adjusting folder icons through File Types doesn't work, I tried altering the
registry at:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Folder\DefaultIcon

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\DefaultIcon

Those didn't work. Is there a nice, quick and clean way that I can use
another icon instead of the Windows XP folder icons? (my dad really hates
them).
