Difference Between "Users" and "Power Users"

Greetings:

I've been trying to find out what the technical differences are between
the two user groups; specifically what is the setting difference that
would DISALLOW a normal user from accessing a System ODBC connection.
The reason I am asking is that so far we have had to resort to adding
whatever user needed to utilize the ODBC connection to the local "Power
Users" grouping. I would like to be able to just have them all as
normal users instead of having to upgrade their security to power user.
If anyone can tell me the specific key or setting to change to allow
users this permission that would be fantastic.

Thanks,

Eric

Have you tried using the compatability security template? It relaxes some of
the Pro's (2k and XP) security settings in relation to software that doesn't
work with window user accounts well. THis way they are still technically
Users (can't make system changes on their own) but legacy apps (or basically
non-microsoft apps.) won't lose functionality. To do this: log on as admin,
start > Run> cmd and change your path to %systemroot%\security\templates.
Then type in: secedit /configure /cfg compatws.inf /db compatws.sdb

Well, that 'fixed' it. I can remove them from the Power Users group and
they will still have functionality of the application, however I'm
still curious as the exact setting changing. I suppose I'll have to
actually look over key by key to find my answer, but if someone has a
better solution I'm all ears.

So far, I've just had to implement having everyone using the compatws
security template. I still have yet to find anywhere on the net where
anyone has looked at the handfull of changes that compatws makes and
figure out which one would effect the ODBC. Ah well, so much for the
wonder of the web.
