Difference between a sfc /scannow and a repair/overlay install?

What are the differences?

well, sfc /scannow checks your system for damaged or deleted dll files or
other system files and repairs them, or installs them when they are missing,
and the disk might be needed, or not, but have never heard of a
repair/overlay install. I've heard of a repair install, a clean install,
and an in-place upgrade, but never a repair/overlay install.
A repair install will attempt to repair your copy of windows by deleting
your files, then reinstalling them with the OS disk.

System File Checker (sfc.exe) is part of Windows File Protection.

sfc /scannow Scans all protected system files immediately.

If any files in \WINDOWS\system32 are messed up or missing they are replaced
with copies from WINDOWS\system32\dllcache, the XP CD or other locations.

A Repair Install also called an in-place upgrade deals with way more files.
It deals with almost everything in the WINDOWS folder.

sfc /scannow ain't no thing a Repair Install is a big deal. Backing up your
data is a big deal with a repair install, not so big a deal with
sfc /scannow.

Never heard of an overlay install before.

Maybe if you use Linux...

really a standard installation type for most operating systems. We use this
term to designate the Realm Kit installations which are performed on a
pre-existing Red Hat Linux base through a series of RPM package

Thanks for all input. Your understanding of scf /scannnow and repair
installation is correct.

As to "overlay installation", based on my research, it is called "overlay
installation" when your computer is using hard disk management software
(such as Disk Manager, EZ-Drive, or DrivePro) for hard disk geometry
translation. It is mentioned in the following article.
