Did not activate Windows XP Home within the 30 day time period.

Hi,
I made a new computer using the OEM Windows Xp home edition. This computer
was made for a friend, and at the time did not have access to the internet.
The computer was not turned on until today when the Cox technician came to
install the internet (been well over 30 days since XP installation). Now
Windows Xp starts the load menu then shortly after restarts itself.

My question is what are my options as to activating the Windows XP Home.
Will reformatting the computer again yeild me another 30 days? Reformatting
will be no problem because nothing new has been installed other than the
drivers and the Xp Home Edition. If there are any other simple methods or if
the method mentioned does not work, please let me know.

Boot into Safe Mode, and do the activation from there. I believe it will
require phone activation.

I have not seen the computer as of yet, but will tomorrow. I am also curious
if this could be a hardware issue? Just making sure, but if windows has not
been activated within the 30 days and the 4 day grace period, is windows no
longer able to load? From what i was told, the furthest screen reached was
the Windows XP Home loading menu.

Usually there is an option to activate by phone, you need the serial number
on the back of the packaging that the CD was in. A folder insert in the box
in my case, (retail version).

If you suspect a hardware problem, then I would not activate, as the OEM
version can only be activated once AFAIK.

It wouldn't hurt to reinstall, install the internet, then activate over the
net if things are working fine.

OEM retail version comes with a sticker. The sticker has the product key on
it. Instructions provided tells the installer to adhere the sticker to the
case of the PC. Typical location is top, forward-most on the case of the
PC. Another is anywhere is in the front unvented, unlabeled area large
enough for the sticker, not blocking any potential 3.5" or 5.25" bays. Some
place the sticker on the side/back/bottom due to laziness or prevent soiling
of the sticker. Have seen one sadist put the sticker on the inside
removable panel of the PC.
