dialog boxes very slow

When I open the dialog box 'File/Open' in a Windows Office application (e.g.
Word2002, Access2002) and I select a drive or map, it works very slow: I
have to wait many seconds before the map opens.

The dialog box 'File/Save as...' has the same problems.

I have all service packs and updates installed of Windows XP.

The problem doesn't exist in other programs (e.g. when I activate in Outlook
Express the dialog box 'save as...' to save an attachment of an e-mail,
there is no problem).

I suppose it has something to do with network connections. I have more than
one computer and the computer on which I use VPN-connection, gives the
greatest problems (even when the VPN-connection is closed).

Can I do something to solve the problem?
