dial-up networking, improving performance

I am running a small office in nigeria with five computers connected
through a server to a dial-up connection to the internet. The
connection, from what we were given by the company, comes with a
telephone line, the telephone equipment itself serving as the modem. We
have a problem right now. the speed given on the connection is 250
kbps. i don't know if am missing anything that would make you help me,
but my workers are unable to interact with clients online, my support
people, because the connection does not go through? i am thinking:
should i change provider? i believe they all give close to the same
speed.
Can i increase the speed somehow?
What should i do so that we can still connect to the net reasonably.

You should contact the telephone company's tech support on this. There
is no way people reading about your issue are going to be able to help
you with your hardware problems in Nigeria.

It sounds like your connection passes too little data to reliably
connect. This is not something you can fix from your end - you need to
contact the people from whom you are getting the Internet access.

If they are unable or unwilling to help you, then look for third-party
tech support in your town.
