I upgraded my computer from win98 to windowsXP and the modem stopped
working. Is there any freeware modem that I can install to connect to
Internet?
Thanx

The modem stopped working because you need the XP drivers for it.

A modem is a piece of hardware, not software. They don't usually
give hardware away free. Your present modem will work just fine
under XP with the right driver.

Read all about it and maybe with some luck you can find the drivers

It is a mind bender, isn't it :) Keeps you from going through the nosy
membership questions for their sponsers
Then go to this page:

I tried a search didn't find anything, but....

silliness :)

The quick and dirty fix would be to delete the modem in Devise Manager,
reboot, and see if XP doesn't detect it and supply a workable driver
automagically.

I was wondering: does someone know another way to phrase that?
"upgraded" implies the thing one changed to is better.
which isn't necessarily so.

If it was from Win98 to Win2000 now thats what I call an upgrade don't
no about WinXP

I have the same modem. Win XP Pro recognizes it as a GVC Fax Data Modem
and has native support for it. Move the modem to another PCI slot and
see if XP will install it properly when it restarts. Should do the
trick. Good luck.

Relative to this post and not wishing to put anyone off - I had/have
an HCF modem and windowsXP flatly refused to recognise it. I could not
find drivers for it and those drivers purporting to be working ones
didn't. Now I am talking 2 or ? yrs ago but would you fellas think the
drivers might now be around and would they actually work. Most people
that use HCF modems seem to think quite highly of them!

In my experience HCF modems are terrible. I had one but could never
get a connect speed greater than 33600 if I had my two telephone
handsets on the line. Remove the handsets and the speed jumped to
44000. I next went to a Dynalink Sidewinder external with similar
results. Finally I purchased a Banksia Wave SP external and now
regularly connect at 49333 with the average being 48000.
