dial-up icon

The modem dial-up window stopped dropping down into
the "I'm on" icon at the bottom of the screen. The icon is
what I used to see that the connection was still on and to
disconnect. Consequently, I'm now simply unplugging the
telephone cord to disconnect resulting a redial window.
The small window to ask for a connection only offers
connect - no disconnect; the network connections window
offers no disconnect. How do I get the connection icon
back?

Go to Control Panel, open Network Connections, right click the connection
that you use, left click Properties. When the Properties for that
connection dialog box opens, look at the bottom left and make sure that the
option: Show icon in Notification Area has a check mark in the box to the
left of it. If there isn't a check mark, then click the box to add the
check mark, then click the OK button at the bottom of the dialog box. If
the check mark is already there, perhaps the problem has to do with the icon
the Notification Area being hidden. If that's the case, right click the
clock on your Taskbar, left click Properties. When the Taskbar and Start
Menu Properties dialog box opens click the Customize button. When the
Customize Notifications dialog box opens, under the heading Current Items,
find your connection, click on it to highlight, then click the arrow on the
right side of that line and select the behavior that you want. Then click
the OK button at the bottom of that dialog box, and the Apply and OK buttons
at the bottom of the remaining dialog box.
