dial-up connection

Hello,
I have XP and try to dial up but get no dial tone. I've
tried everything, and the phone line and modem are
working. I need help please! Also, when the phone line is
plugged into my modem in my computer, even when it is not
connected to the internet, the phone line to the house is
disabled. It's really weird and I don't know much about
this sort of thing.

Make sure that the line is plugged into the jack on the
modem for wall or line NOT phone. If pluged into phone,
when the modem picks up it disconnects the phone jack and
will give you no dial tone.

If you determined that the modem was working using the
control panel modem diagnostic, then the modem output
transformer could still be bad giving a no dial tone
error. This test only tells you that the computer can
talk to the modem.
