Dial Up Connection Window Pops Up

Hi,
I have been referred here by Freudi.
read voluminous blogs, c-net, etc., etc., > correctly, this is the one that
"calls home". Is this correct.
Nope, KB892130 will *not* connect. Please post your observations into the
Security newsgroup. Bye, Freudi

I am on dial up and I don’t connect every time I use my computer. Every
time Windows XP starts up the Dial Up Connection window pops up. I have to
click Settings, change it from “Dial whenever a network connection is not
present†*back* to “Never dial a connectionâ€, click Apply, OK. Then the
window pops up three more times after clicking Cancel each time. Then I have
to open Internet Properties to change it to “Never dial a connection†because
*it* is checked to “Dial whenever a network connection is not presentâ€, again
also. This has been happeningfor the couple months or so that's why I
thought it might be 892130 installed 2/18 then *again* 6/4.

I have scanned with just about everything, HJT, AdAware, Spybot, AV,
etc........ and my system appears to be as clean as a whistle. I don't see
anything running that shouldn't be when it pops up.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to stop this? (aside from Karens
Korner-Disable/Enable Auto Dialing, as a last resort).
Thanks.

Hi Judy,
When it happend what AVs and Anti-spyware you have been runing?
Do you mean every time you change to *Never Dail Up Connection* it set
itself back again!.
This behaviour can happen if you Allow the or let the AVs to Keep the
settings and not allow to change or if you have been Runing Spybot in Real
Tea Time it will make trouble and will nver give up without a fight!.
To troubleshoot try to Disable Add-Ons or Toolbars in the IE Properties
window under the Programs Tab and leave just MS-Add-Ons and Cllick OK and
Click OK/Apply.

Then Try to Dsable your AV Firewall, Ad-Awre (Ijuess it is the one making
the trouble) Disable it and uninstall Spybot and delete all traces left
behind for it and try your Settings for * Never Dail up Connection* and then
Reboot.
If all goes well try to install Spybot and do not let it immunize your
system and enable your Add-Ons again.

Yes! Every time! Quite aggravating to say the least. And not only do I
have to change it back to Never... in the popup window, I also have to go
into Internet Properties, Connection, and change it back to Never Dial a
Connection again. As a matter of fact, I just looked there and it is changed
back *again* now to "Dial whenever a network connection is not present".
Argh.

By AV I meant Anti-Virus, should have been more clear, Symantec AntiVirus
Corporate Edition. Realtime protection is on. But the only time it dials if I
am not connected is Wednesday night at 8:00 as it is Scheduled.

I use Spybot Search & Destroy, but not the Tea Timer. The "Browser helper to
block bad downloads" is on and "Enable permanent blocking of bad addresses in
IE" I have checked (on), in Default Mode. And in Advance Mode "Resident
"SDHelper", is on. And I don't have any of the Automated settings selected.
To troubleshoot try to Disable Add-Ons or Toolbars in the IE Properties

Weeell, I didn't install SP2....yet. Shhh, don't tell anyone.

How about I just stop Spybot from running at startup first instead of
uninstall it. Then try not letting Anti-Virus run at start up. I have Zone
Alarm(free) firewall. I can try stopping that at start up but that does not
try to connect.

I'll let you know what happens. Thank you very much.

Hi Judy,
Sorry for the miss typos and dis-organized thoughts/Steps, I have been in a
hurry to watch Football.
The Culprit in your situation here I guess is the Zone Alarm is preventing
you from changing the settings, try to disable and see if you could change it.
If not then Uninstall the Zone Alarm and set your settings, when changed
reinstall the Zone Alarm and Confiure it in the right way/Configurations and
let you have Control on your system, read the help file with it.

In an issue like your's but the user can't change the home page, it appeared
that zone alarm was the culprit behind this behavoiur and also AdWare too can
be.
Do not worry about your secuirty if you will not browse to a bad site/s, and
not for a long time to see your connection set as you like it to be * Never
Dail Up Connection*, then you can reinstall your Softwares One-by-one and
Reboot after each installation and test and configure them and update your
definintions.
Some cases even if you Disable the ZA/AdWare you still have trouble to
Change/Configure your system.

Hi Nass,
Well, well. It was Weatherbug. Its an old 3.0 version. Spybot killed the
minibug a long time ago. I think it was AdAware killed the transponder. So
its safe.

When I went into Run, msconfig, to stop Spybot from starting up, Spybot
isn't there. I didn't realize that. But you gave me an idea. I did a
Selective start up and unchecked everything under that. Then one by one
checked one and restarted, until I got to Load Startup Items then under
Startup, I checked one Item at a time and restarted until I got the Dial Up
Connection popup. It happened with weather marked for Weatherbug. So I
changed one of the preferences in Weatherbug, and I'm not getting the the
Dial Up Connection popup any more and the "Never Dial A Connection" stays
selected .
Thank you so much for your time and help. I appreciate it. I can sleep
now. :) Don't worry about the typos. LOL.
I hope your team won.

What!? Connect to the internet without a firewall? I don't think so. And I
hope you don't do that either. I understand what you were saying, but this
is the biggest No No in the universe.
Stay safe.

Hi Judy,
Glad to hear your problem been fixed and thanks for the Feedback. I meant by
disabling your firewall to leave it turned OFF for a Minute and see if the ZA
was the culprit in this situation, but in your case it was the WeatherBug
because it need to update it's Database.
I never be without Firewall on my PC or advise anybody to do so, unless to
solve a problem the Firewall have been causing.

Hi Nass,
Oh, I'm sorry. I misunderstood about the firewall. All's working ok now.
I'm satisfied with the old Weatherbug I have.It works fine and I get the
alerts. I finally got it to stop telling me to update too. I have the
newest version on my computer at work and I don't like all the ads and extra
windows. If I update I'd have to "kill" it all over again. LOL.

Thanks for all your help. Have a great 4th.
