Dial-up connection triggers if ADSL link slow

I have just started using an ADSL link connected via a Netgear router/modem.
All good and quick, but occasionally when the link is a bit slow to respond,
my machine attempts to start up a dial-up session.

I only have one dial-up account shown, and have selected 'Never dial an
internet connection' - but still it does so!

Any thoughts, please?

Try deleting that connection from the Connections dialog.
(Select it and click on Remove.)

You haven't disclosed your OS but in some cases it may be possible
to retain a connection for use by manual dialling. (E.g. in NTx look
at the rasphone and rasdial commands.)
