Dial-Up connection disappeared in Network Connections

All,

I need help with this. I have scoured the newsgroups, but, nothing
works.

Running XP Pro SP1a with all updates.

All of a sudden, my dialup connection disappeared in the Network
Connections folder. It also disappeared in the Start | Connect To
menu.

I tryed recreating the connection using the Connection Wizard and it
gets created. I see the new connection in Network Connections as I
use the wizard, but, as soon as I am finished, it also disappears.

I see the connections in Internet Explorer | Tools | Internet Options
| Connections. I can also use rasphone.exe to use these connections.
The connection icon never shows up in the tray, so, the only way to
disconnect is to use rasphone.exe again.

Is there a solution to this problem? Any assistance appreciated.

Sometimes a corrupted LAN connection can keep RAS connections from
appearing. Compare the

connections in your connections folder to the network adapters in device
manager. There should

be a 1-1 pairing. If a connection doesn't appear in the connections folder,
reinstall the

adapter in device manager.

Ken,

I tried that. I have a RTL8139 LAN card that I disbled in Network
Connections since I dont have a LAN connection. I also saw that it
was disabled in the Device Manager. I had heard that a corrupt LAN
connection could cause this behavior, so, I unistalled the device in
Dev Mgr and rebooted letting the OS reinstall it, but, still no dice.
I then unistalled it again, did a scan for HW changes, let it install.
Still no dice. Did a reboot, no luck there. I have disabled the
RTL8139 again, but, still all new coonections I try to make in Network
Connections disappear. They show up in rasphone.exe and in IE, but
not in Network Connections.

The only thing that has changed on this machine was the latest round
of XP updates that came out the other day.

Any other ideas?

Dave

And there is nothing else in Device Manager\Network Adapters except for the
RTL8139?

Ken,

That is correct. No other network adapters in machine, no more in device manager.
