Dial up and DNS Errors

Have a really odd problem . a forum that I use I cannot access thru my normal
ISP,(Freeserve) I get a DNS error that comes up immediately. If however I use
Virgin Pay as You Go. I can access the page with no problems. I have
reformatted and contacted Freeserve (who didn't bother to respond) and just
cannot work out how I can try and connect to the site with Freeserve and get
zilch but can redial in with Virgin and have no problems! Any advice would
be greatly appreciated as it is driving me nuts!

If you can resolve the IP of the web page you might be able to connect
that way.

Open up a command prompt and type in:
ping www.name of the page you want
Press return.

Look at the line that starts pinging and you will see the page name and
in [] a number. Put that number exactly into your browser address bar
and click go.

Freeserve might have a DNS problem but in my experience most ISP's won't
admit to that.

Kind regards

Hi Wab :)

Many thanks for the prompt respons.. Ok when I connected thru Freeserve it
wouldn't ping. when I connected thru Virgin it would ping and I put the
number into my browser only to get a page then saying that *There is no
website configured at this address.*. this applies wehen I dial in with both
ISP's. Reconnected again to Virgin and when I click on the normal addy for
the forum it loaded... any more suggestions on what I can do please :)

Best Regards

This sounds like a problem with the DNS server at Freeserve. Change it
over to use Virgin's and see. When logged in at Virgin, Start - Run and
run cmd.exe

Give the command
ipconfig /all
and look for the two sets of numbers, like 195.92.195.93 against DNS
Servers (that is actually one of Freeserve's). Note them down, and
Exit.

Now in Control Panel - Network Connections right click on your
Freeserve one, and take Properties. On the Networking page, highlight
Internet. . .TCP/IP in the middle and click Properties. Click in the
button to select 'Use the following DNS. . ' and enter the ones for
Virgin instead. Click Apply, OK out and see how it goes.

Hi Alex,

Many thanks for that.. have tried that and <sigh> when those settings are
applied no web pages will load.. all that happens is that www-cache
freeserve.com appears at the bottom of the page and I get the please check
your DNS settings etc etc... my proxy settings when i click on them are
http://www-cache.freeserve.com and Port 8080.. dont know if those would need
to be changed at all?

Thank you Wab & Alex for your help, went and looked up some other UK ISP DNS
settings and finally seems that Tiscali settings seem to work.. so fingers
crossed it stays that way, and although this was frustrating I have learnt
something new!

Well here we go again.. same problem with ANY dns settings... tried them all
and the same page won't load. Freeserve/Wanadoo say there is no problem, but
there is.. any suggestions what to do next?

Hi Alex :)

Really not sure what changed and why it loaded, I changed and messed around
with the DNS settings and that again fixed it (for the time being anyway)
:). although now we FINALLY have broadband no doubt I will again have
problems!!! Once again many thanks for your help.
