Dial-up Access

I am out in the country with dial-up access. I notice
that when using Outlook 2002 and/or Internet Explorer 6.0
that after closing these applications, but while my dial-
connection is still active I stil am sending and receving
bytes and the little icon on the system tray continues to
light up. Can someone tell me why?

Scan with current antivirus using updated definitions (you have one,
right?). Remove spyware with tools like Spybot S&D and/or Ad-aware.
Check for legitimate but invasive programs that are running in the
background and looking for updates. Limit the unnecessary programs.
