For some reason the sound of dialing doesn't work any more, everything
else has sound just the modem dialing is mute. System is WIN - XP Home,
on a Toshiba laptop with 2.40GHz Intel Celeron CPU.

Thanks

Does it matter, as long as you are connecting?

Find "phone and modem options" in Control Panel.

Click MODEM tab, then PROPERTIES, then MODEM again.

Is the slider bar for the modem volume to the right?

Yes the slider is all the way to the right.

Control Panel - Phone and Modem, on Modems, highlight it, Properties and
on Advanced add in the Extra settings
M1
which has sound on until connected - the usual best thing

L0 to L3 also control the volume - it may be on L0, too low
so
M1L2

OK, the 'sound of dialing' and the tones your modem makes are from the
internal speaker of the computer. Do you hear any 'beeps' at startup?
Remove the case and have a look at the speaker. Is it plugged in? Is it
working? (You can test it with a single 1.5 volt battery, if it clicks when
you hook up the battery, it's ok) If not, either plug it in or replace the
speaker. If you don't feel comfortable doing that, take it to the shop, it
shouldn't cost much for that.

Hm? I've never seen a system where the modem sounds are coming from
the internal computer speaker. They are generated from the MODEM.
I've heard them on computers that don't have an internal speaker.

Dave, is it an internal or external modem?
With an external modem the speaker volume is usually adjustable by AT
commands using Hyper Terminal. You need to set up a connection through Hyper
Terminal (see Help & Support) and to know what AT commands you need you
should refer to the modem manual.
I don't know how to adjust an internal modem.

Control Panel, Phone & Modem Options, Modems tab, Properties, Modem tab.
Adjust the slide control.

Depends. Some older hardware modems (usually old ISA cards) have their
own speakers
