Diagnostic system boot/check

OS is XP Pro.

Sometimes on first start up, it goes into a Diagnostic System Check/Boot.
Usually, I can hit ESC, and it boots up ok.

I had run scan disc, and to fix errors.

Anyone have any ideas of what's causing this? Any help would be
appreciated. If you need more information, let me know what you need.

What do you mean by "Diagnostic System Check/Boot"? Is it the chkdsk or
a computer suppliers proprietary system? If you allow the Diagnostic
System to complete what happens? What messages are displayed?

Scandisk does not exist in Windows XP -it was last used in Windows ME.
Do you mean chkdsk? This is the equivalent tool in Windows XP?

How exactly do you shut down your computer? Please describe what you do.
If you just press the power button this is the wrong way to shut down
and will cause the system to carry out checks the next time the computer
is started up.

Please post copies of any Error or Warning Reports for the last twodays
from the System log in Event Viewer.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer.

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event
Viewer.Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from
Event Viewer.

Thanks for responding Gerry!

The machine says "Diagnostic System Boot Selected". This is, I assume,
Windows, and starts diagnostics before you can do anything.

But, I wanted to let you know, I discovered another problem. Which, I
believe I figured everything out. The machine would start typing by itself,
in the field. I scanned for viruses, ran Spybot, and came up empty. Upon
writing down the letters, the machine typed out (a laptop BTW), it was
typing the bottom row of keys & symbols. I noticed this when I moved the
machine also, it was puzzling at first, because it doesn't do it all the
time.

A call to Dell, with all the symptoms, confirmed my thoughts it must be in
the keyboard. Anyways, they are sending me a keyboard this week, and I hope
this is what the problem is/was. Otherwise, the machine gets sent back to
them, because it's still under warranty.

I'll keep you posted, when all said and done.

What does the Diagnostic System say if you allow it to complete.

With a computer under warranty you have to be careful what you do in
order not to void the warranty. When does the warranty expire? Remember
it may not cover all components.

Hi Gerry,


Everything "passes".

It was Dell's idea to send the keyboard. They told me, if it doesn't fix
the problem, I'll have to send it back to them. I have 186 days left on the
warranty.

Interesting, I typed in Google, to see if I could find problems similar to
what I have. I found one about the self-typing, which appeared to be
related to the voice (I can't think of the technical term right off).

On the keyboard, I found a couple of similar problems. Here's one of them.

I received my keyboard this morning. I installed it, and so far (knock on
wood) _all_ problems appear to be corrected. YEAH!!!!!!!!!!!
