In an 2000 (or 2003) Active Directory does it really matter if your
DHCP server is running on a Windows box, or is it just as good to have
DHCP running on a Linux box or some other device?

What would be gained from moving DHCP to (or from) a Windows Server on
the domain?

i don't think it would matter too much. But microsoft dhcp supports the
following in case you need them:

1. register A records on behalf of the legacy clients that can't
register by themselves
2. dhcp relay agent
