DHCP problem - The semaphore timeout period has expired. - IP 0.0.0.0

I can't get my Windows XP Pro system to get an IP address from the DHCP server...I get "The semaphore timeout period has expired. " (in System Event Log) and the IP address is set to 0.0.0.0

This problem occurs on my internal NIC and my wireless card. Everything is OK if I assign a fixed IP address

Other systems on my network get their IP address fine, and also when I run a VIRTUAL MACHINE on the same problem PC (using Microsoft Virtual PC 2004)...it works fine too! So I think the DHCP server is OK (this is a NETGEAR DG834G router)

Surely it must be some driver or software problem but I can't see it. I have tried doing a "Repair" on the connection but it errors saying "can't renew IP" and "can't flush ARP cache"
