dhcp or not

Dave

hi,

i just walked into this and i need some help (this company's admin
died a few months ago and they just hired me):

i am now administering a content filtering firewall behind a router.

the firewall previously handed out dhcp addresses, but it can only
hand out 250 addresses. we have exceeded this number of addresses and
need to bring a dhcp server up. we are using the private 192.168.x.x
range.

i have a 2000 server box that isn't doing anything yet, but should i:

a) turn on dhcp with the scope of 192.168.0.1 - 192.168.255.255 and
have the gateway by 192.168.150.1 (firewall) and the dns settings the
settings of the provider?

or

b) turn on nat and figure out how to configure it.

the problem is that the firewall has to do all the content filtering
and the server has one nic. i had thought that dhcp would work just
fine as the 2k server would hand out ip's from the private range and
all traffic would go through the firewall (150.1) and life would be
fine. but now i'm not so sure.

thanks for any help,

dave

Hi,

It sounds to me like your best option is "a" configure DHCP on the Windows
2000 server and point the client's default gateway to the firewall. No need
to add NAT since your firewall is already doing NAT.
