Device Manager "error code 31"

This device is not working properly because Windows cannot
load the drivers required for this device. (Code 31) The
device here refers to my Palm-to-USB HotSync Cable. I
started to have this problem only after I upgraded my OS
from Compaq preinstalled Win ME to Win 2000 Professional.
I've done all I could by following online self-help sites,
clean uninstall & install my device, upgraded my Windows
Update & Office Update to the latest SP4 & fixes, but all
attempts still fail. Pls tell me how should I fix this,
thank you.

Greetings Mike,
I took your advice to delete the Key but the following
errors appear when I try to delete:
-Run regedit: shows "Error Deleting Key" >> Cannot delete
{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}: Error while
deleting key.
-Run regedt32: "Access Denied" >> Registry Editor could
not delete the key currently selected. The key, or one of
its subkeys does not give you DELETE access.
Any advise, deeply appreciate.

You may want to back up your registry before doing this!!!!!!

Log onto your computer as administrator. I'm not sure if deleting
that key as an admin fixes it for all (I don't recall exactly where
the key is), so we'll trick it. Log in as administrator, run
regedt32. Navigate to that key and select it. At the top, select
scurity and then permissions. On that dialog box, make you an
authorized user with full-access to that key. You may need to uncheck
the box at the bottom allowing the key to inherit properties from it's
parent keys.

Now, log back in on your user-name and follow the directions from
M$...

BE VERY CAREFUL doing this! I'd hate for you to really screw up you
computer. ONLY work with the key you need to delete, since you'll be
deleting it, changing the security permissions will have a null effect
once it's gone...
