I am getting a box pop up that tells me either that the system has recovered from a serious problem and to nreport it to micrsoft or that the system is shutting down in 60 secs,close everything or lose it .I am quite new to all this computer stuff so any hints would be of help.

First off, never surf the i-net without an active virus scanner with updated definitions and always have your firewall turned on. You are infected by the old but still around, blaster virus. Go to any online scanner and see if you can get it cleaned out. {:~)
