Device Can Perform Faster, Problem

Running on Windows XP pro. Just plugged in a new Kanguru 80GB external USB
2.0 drive in to my computer. A bubble message popped up saying the Device
Can Perform Faster switch it to a high speed USB 2 port. My computer only
has USB 2 ports. As a result, data will only flow at USB 1.1 rate.

I plugged the Kanguru into two different XP Pro machines that only have USB
2.0 ports with the same result. Yet I use and Iomega 80 GB external and a
LaCie 250 GB external drive with no such problem on all of these machines.

I searched the Microsoft Knowledge Base and found nothing. I Googled this
problem and apparently there are a bunch of folks that experience this
problem which in many cases is only caused by certain USB 2 devices. None
of the entries I found seemed to offer an explination or a good, dependable
solution.

Is there a solution to this problem?

Is dumping the Kanguru drive for one that doesn't cause the problem the
only answer?

Is there something in the devices that makes XP think that it only has USB
1.1 ports?

TIA

Well, it appears you have narrowed the problem to the Kanguru device.
Same device in different USB ports and on different hosts still has the
problem but different devices using those same USB ports in different
computers does not have the problem. So the defect is in the Kanguru
drive. Time to call them up for tech support and possible to get an
RMA.

Every now and then, I have this problem when I plug a in a usb flash drive. I
don't know what causes it but a cold restart (power off and wait a minute or
two before restart) usually fixes it.

Thanks for the feedback.

Came to the same conclusion. Got an rma and sent it on its way.

I was able to simulate the problem by plugging in a Targus USB 1.1 four
port extension that had a USB 2.0 flash drive plugged in. This would seem
to indicate the Kanguru is somehow hardwired somehow for 1.1 but has 2.0
firmware or some permutation of that.

Are the USB connectors internally different for 1.1 somehow from 2.0
devices?

For the devices that trigger this advisory, was a powered USB hub being
used and was the USB device connected through it? It has been reported
that the power limitation on the USB connectors may elicit the message.
