detecting a virus or malfunction

I am trying to help my grandfather resume internet access
and it will dial up (netzero) but it stays on the same
page and loads and loads and..etc.. it says it is
contacting site 127.0.0.01 and it says this for every
address i type in. i reconfigured his internet settings
and installed norton, but i can;t access the web to do
the live update for virus definitions and i have no clue
what is going on. he told me he had a message come up
saying there was a parasite detected? is this a gimic or
what. please help. desperate in wyoming.

Not sure if this is the problem Amy, but try running the Winsock repair
tools on the very bottom
of this page:
http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm

It is best if you run one or both of the following first:

Download/install/run Ad-Aware from:
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/
This will detect any spyware on your system. When you run Ad-Aware, click on
the ref update to get the latest up-to-date ref file, run Ad-Aware and
delete everything it finds.

If you are more advanced, then download/install/run:
Spybot - Search & Destroy from :
http://security.kolla.de/index.php?lang=en&page=download
