I removed the hard drive from my old computer before i disposed of it. What
can i physically do to destroy the hard drive.

install it as a secondary
drive, eg slave harddisk
on the pc you are using
now?

this would be an assurance
that your data will be retained
and the component wont add
to the enviromental issues and
you will have added more space
on your pc.

Opening it up is usually good enough. But while it's open, you can
also break off pieces, rub dirt inside, etc.

Hammer.
Chisel.
Hammer and Chisel.
Blow torch would likely work.
Steam Rollers... They are okay.
Drill press.
Angle Grinder...

Regarding "...physically ..." a good hammer should do the trick.

Scratching the hard disk surface with a nail or screw driver multiple
times should work. Even a "bad" hammer should work.

After wiping my hard disk, I dropped my old computer six feet onto a
concrete surface before taking the whole package to the recycle center.
