Destination is not a DIRECTORY.

After entering "expand cd-rom D:\i386\config.nt
C:\windows\system32\config.nt" I got Destination is not a directory
"C:\windows\system32\config.nt". Can't seem to be able to get past this,
does anyone have a solution? It's driving me nuts!

you are expanding the file config.nt into the directory
C:/windows/system32........where it will overwrite the file that's already
there.

Have your CD in the drive and paste this in the command window...

expand d:\i386\AUTOEXEC.NT_ c:\Windows\system32\AUTOEXEC.NT

Hit the ENTER key.

Pasting prevents typos and wrong number of spaces, etc.
-----

Or just do this...

Copy the autoexec.nt file from C:\Windows\Repair to C:\Windows\System32.
And set Attributes for autoexec.nt to Read-only.

Read-only
[[Specifies whether this file is read-only, which means that it cannot be
changed or accidentally deleted.]]

1. Right click the file.
2. Properties.
3. Select: Read-only.
4. Click: Apply.
5. Click: OK.

Gee.....if you did not like my answer just say so.
actually after reading it I seem to have not typed a part of it.....sorry

Nepatsfan

If you're simply looking to replace the file then the command
should read as follows:

expand D:\i386\config.nt C:\Windows\system32

C:\windows\System32 is a directory.
C:\windows\system32\config.nt is a file.
That's what the error message meant

N

Nepatsfan

That should have been:

expand D:\i386\config.nt_ C:\Windows\system32

There's a space between expand and D:\ and between nt_ and C:\

Sorry for the confusion.

N

Nepatsfan

Sorry, it's been a long day. Make that:

expand D:\i386\config.nt_ C:\Windows\system32 /r

I left out the rename switch. Once again, sorry for the
confusion.

peter,

I had assumed that the OP had lost his autoexec.nt do to the plethora of
posts about 16-bit MS-DOS Subsystem errors.

I also re-read my post and showed the Op how to expand autoexec.nt not
config.nt like they were asking about.

I also see that Nepatsfan is having problems also.

Long day.

Oops. I need to learn to read.

Try these...

expand -r d:\i386\CONFIG.NT_ c:\Windows\system32\CONFIG.NT

expand -r d:\i386\command.co_ c:\Windows\system32\command.com

expand -r d:\i386\AUTOEXEC.NT_ c:\Windows\system32\AUTOEXEC.NT

You can also copy CONFIG.NT from C:\WINDOWS\repair to C:\Windows\System32.
And set Attributes for autoexec.nt to Read-only.

Christ.........after all that I hope "seeker" will determine what is the right
answer

The Seeker has arisen! Thanks a lot Wesley Vogel for the tip on
"C:\windows\repair". I copied out Autoexec.nt (which was missing (system
didn't ask about an over write)) and config.nt (which did ask) to the
C:\windos\system32" directory. Now Loading a new Program is no problem.

Again thanks. and thanks to everyone else for thier inputs too:)

Tks. Seeker
