Hi,

Is there any way my Microsoft Works on my XP computer at home, or my MS Word
on my Office XP workstation can do htm (html) file saving?

I've always used Notepad, but such serious malware issues have continued to
sabatoge that program.

Tech support (in the security forum here) and I have tried many, many
different things and I am still unable to regain uncorrupted use of Notepad.
We're still working on it.

can't go into all the attmpets we made ... very many fixes, uploads,
file-runs; scans; etc., etc ... too many to list.

I mostly at this point just want to get my Works program or my Office Word
to be able to do html text. Does anyone know, is that posible? I tried to
search their respective help pages, but I don't see where it's mentioned if
it is at all possible.

Would really appreciate any comments on this ... if nothing works, I could
go out and just buy some html editor (any recommendations?)

Thanks, a lot!

My answer is contemptuous. The correct question is what are the symptoms of notepad not working. After all notepad is just an edit control with some menus thrown in. All windows text editors will also be edit controls with menus thrown in. If one just wants to type and cut and paste (eg do things where the edit control doesn't require any external info, like the filename you want to edit) one can make a notepad without a single line of code.

Thanks for those ideas. My reason for making the inquiry was:

First of all, the problem with notepad is it keeps instantly crashing ...
shutting down, and always at the worst time ... and we're still working on
somehow ridding whatever malware may be causing this ... resorting to
uploading or renewing the file from my XP install disks, as well as many
other approaches has not corrected the problem yet.

Secondly, I have tried to write text in either Works or Word, and save it as
"file.htm" (orhtml), but it is not useable as such. I don't understand such
things .... for some reason, you need specail editing ability to translate an
html text file.
Unless there's something I can switch on (or off?) in either Works or Word
to allow it to save html text. Any such thing?

Thanks, Michael

It depends. If you just want to save a plain text file in word, select the
option to save files as MS-DOS text - helps ensure no "strange" formatting.
However, this assumes that you're going to "tag" your text manually...

You save it as plain text with the name you want. Depending on your settings you may need to enclose the name in quotes.

File Name: file.html (or if extensions are hidden "file.html")
Save As Type: Plain Text (*.txt)

Use Wordpad.

Notepad will have entries relating to the crash in event viewer.

If your system is as screwed as that you need to start from scratch
and rebuild it.

If you are creating files in Works or Word and just saving as
"file.html" then the file will be Word or Works file with an incorrect
file extension. Saving with a particular name does NOT convert the
file to html format.

If you are using "Save as..." and changing the *type* in the dropdown
(Save as type...) to HTML, then it should work.

Cheers,

Cliff

You do understand what ",html" files are do you not?
Hypertext Mark-up Language" files are usually internet web page files. Are
you building web pages? Are you trying to edit Web page files?
Perhaps you mught want to use a web page editor for such files. Notepad
works find for that if you understand HTML files and use them as such.
Perhaps you might try useing notpad to edit the files and then save as html
files. (save them in notepad by changing the "file type" to any files, and
then give them an html extension. Then said files will open with Internet
Explorer or Whatever Internet Browser you are using.

Microsoft Word 10. will work well with these extensions:
..wps .doc .txt .htm .html .mhtml .rtf .mcw .ans .asc .dot
Probably a few others as well.
