Have lost all the Icons on the Desktop. I need to
activate the Desktop to get them back. Can't find where
to do that.

Right click the Desktop, Select Arrange Icons by, Show Desktop Icons.

I think you might mean "active desktop" not "activate desktop". But have you
tried this first?
