I copied a photo from an email and pasted it to my desktop. When I did this
all of my desktop icons are now highlighted. Any ideas on why this happened
and how I can correct it?

When you say highlighted, the icons look like you have clicked an icon to
either open or delete?
Have you tried clicking on the desktop away from the icons?
